More importantly don’t just go for the cheapest option as they may not necessarily provide you with the best service and in some cases their haphazard approach can cause more damage to your tree than they should.

The second step is to check their credentials and experience level. You can ask to see id and proof of their credentials. Reputable ones will be more than happy to provide them. The third step is to check is their insurance; this is needed for your own personal protection as well as for the contractor.

Once you have selected a contractor you need to ensure that the work to be carried out is agreed –especially the costs. You should also ensure that they have carried out a risk assessment of the site so that potential problems are spotted and can be dealt with to minimize any potential risk and are wearing the appropriate safety equipment whilst on site.

• Good tree surgeons will never work on their own when tree climbing is involved, also they will never climb trees without the use of ropes and harnesses or at least cherry pickers depending on the tree and the access available.
• Any tree surgeons working on trees that are adjacent to the public highway must comply with the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act of 1991, using appropriate barriers and traffic cones.
